Dear Insane Children, "Are we there yet?!" Almost there! The animations are complete and the disc factory has been reserved. We're just waiting on Ed to put finishing touches on the DVD/Blu-Ray menus. Don't blame him for being slow - he has two good excuses for not yet finishing: First, he's just moved house from Shanghai to New York (just in time for the 4th of July). More critically though, *I* screwed up and gave him an incomplete list of backer names for the credits! Oops As soon as the menus and backer credits are done... off to the factory with the DVDs and Blu-Rays! (Hey, Ed... psst... hurry, the children are getting impatient!) Last update caused a bit of stir with the art style in Ed's animation of Alice's adventure through the mind of Jules Verne. While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions on art (of course!) it's also worth keeping in mind (pun intended) that each journey into a new mind would-could-should be represented in an art style fitting the narrative and tone of that particular mind.
Anime-style Alice is, to my mind, unique, fun, and well worth exploring. She even brought to life a range of new dresses, which I hope we'll see make their way into the cos-play community...
And that's the beauty of Otherlands. Each mind is a different expression of materials and influences. A chance for a director or artist to bring a fresh perspective to Alice's world. Troy's stop-motion adventure into the mind of Wagner plays in stark contrast to the anime style of Verne's mind:
My only hope is we're given an opportunity to explore even more styles throughout a wide range of other minds. What I wouldn't give to see all these minds opened for exploration on a VR platform like Oculus! Ahem, EA? (please n o ) Beyond the animations, serious progress is being made on the "Art of" book. Alex says, "...all is going according to schedule. I'm on track, will be working and polishing it off this week/weekend. Should have no problems supplying a complete (or near complete) proof for next week. (pending Ed's copy and the Bio's at the back). "
We have another test-print of the book being made this week. I'll send along pictures of that as soon as it's delivered from the factory.
Last, but certainly not least, is the Otherlands Storyboard poster, which a handful of backers will receive. (Special thanks to backer Matthew for his input on the design and content on this reward).
That's it for the July update. As always, your comments are questions are welcome in the feedback below.
thoughts???

Nice to see you post some updates on here as well. Even tough I personally have a little hard time to support this Otherlands-idea, I must say, that I'm still very curious about this all. I wanna see those animations myself also. ^^

I'm pretty iffy about it too. Also, R.J is the story writer/director of the first two games. And they had him back to write this one out. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole...going into other's "wonderlands" idea because, first of all, how? I get that she's conquered both her own physical and mental realms but how and why is she now able to go into other's minds? I guess we'll have to wait and see. She's still in her own permanent "Londerland" right???

It was this I asked McGee himself which he refused to answer for some reason. Indeed, how and why? I also believe that she can enter Londerland whenever she wishes too as she's now able to merge Wonderland with the real world. That is what I get, but about the "entering other peoples minds" I do not get or understand.

Not to be blunt or anything but what the fuck happened to Chris Vrenna? He kind of just fell off the banter train.

I also wonder what happened to Chris Vrenna now, that guy can really make music, that's for sure!

There's been no updates on him and he's not on the payment spreadsheet American released. It's like, sure, you went over budget American, but it's not like you were spending all that money on shit you should've been spending it on.

It's sad to hear that Chris Vrenna was not really thought of in the music of Otherlands, that would've made it better if he was. Because, in my opinion, Chris Vrenna sure knows how to create music!

He also knows how to create music for ALICE, because her story is one that needs something else... Not the non-memorable songs from AMR!

Okay let me explain something here. the only thing out of the ordinary when it comes to the spreadsheet of money is the Akaniero art book (mainly because who cares for Akaniero that much to where it deserves an art book? I hear that there's no one working on it anymore. Besides that, the game had flop reviews) which was 3,600 dollars and had nothing to do with Alice. Who knows how much Chris would cost, but it's obvious they couldn't afford it. and everything else seems to be spent within the confines of making the 10 minute shorts. So??? I'm not exactly understanding what you mean by he didn't spend it on what he should have

He didn't budget correctly. Otherlands was a damn mess. He spent too much more on backer rewards. If I can get the art book, the shorts and more than limited edition prints for Around 100 and something pounds (I forget how much I actually paid in the end) then a majority of that money is going to backer rewards. There were too many damn rewards + the kickstarter fee to have enough money to do what McGee actually promised. He definitely promised Vrenna and he's kind of just scrambling so hard when it came to that petition he didn't realise that it made him look like a fucking moron, basically. I love the man but he's a damn idiot. Can't handle any kind of power, or money. He needs to stop using crowd-funding because let's face it, all of his projects so far have failed.
Akaneiro never took off and Alice is a wreck to most fans.

You can also see from the spreadsheet that more money went to kickstarter than the development, animation and legal COMBINED. (But that's just from eyeing the pie chart). I mean of course most of the money is going to the film fee thing but my god American calm the fuck down with the backer rewards. That's just insane.

Maybe he's trying to justify the money XD but I dunno. I kinda wish we were getting a game lol or at least a full length movie but he knows that just getting ANYTHING at this point is better than nothing and he's right

Listening to your fans is also better than not, so it's not exactly like he's in the right. With crowdfunding you really need to keep people updated. If not, then there becomes problems like this.
